Ingredients

  • 4 cups All-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons Active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoons Salt
  • 1 ¼ cups Warm water (110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter, melted
  • ½ cup Milk (whole or 2%)

Instructions

  • Prepare the yeast mixture: In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar and yeast in warm water. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  • Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and salt until well combined.
  • Add wet ingredients: Pour the yeast mixture into the dry ingredients, along with the melted butter and milk. Stir until the dough comes together.
  • Knead the dough: On a floured surface, knead the dough for about 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough is sticky, gradually add a bit more flour until it reaches the desired consistency.
  • First Rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until it doubles in size, doubles in size.
  • Shape the dough: After the dough has risen, punch it down to release air bubbles. Shape it into a loaf and place it into a greased 9x5 inch loaf pan.
  • Second rise: Cover the dough again and let it rise for another 30 minutes until it fills the pan.
  • Bake: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 30-35 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  • Cool and Serve: Let the bread cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving for the best texture and flavor.

Notes

  • Ensure your water isn’t too hot when activating the yeast—110°F is ideal.
  • If using a stand mixer, knead the dough with a dough hook on medium speed for about 7 minutes.
