Fried Green Tomatoes are a Southern classic made from unripe green tomatoes, coated in a seasoned cornmeal or flour mixture, and fried until crispy. Popularized by the 1991 movie, this versatile dish is often served as an appetizer, side, or snack.

Ingredients

  • 4 Large green tomatoes
  • 1 cup All-purpose flour
  • ½ cups Cornmeal
  • ½ cups Breadcrumbs
  • 2 Large eggs
  • ½ cups Buttermilk or regular milk
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • ½ tsp Black pepper
  • ½ tsp Garlic powder optional
  • ¼ tsp Cayenne pepper optional
  • Oil for frying Vegetable

Instructions

  • Wash and slice green tomatoes into 1/4-inch thick slices.
  • Set up three bowls: one with flour, one with whisked eggs and buttermilk, and one with cornmeal, breadcrumbs, and seasonings.
  • Coat the tomato slices by dipping them in flour, egg mixture, then the breadcrumb mixture.
  • Heat oil in a skillet to 350°F (175°C) and fry the tomatoes for 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown.
  • Drain on paper towels, then serve with your favorite dipping sauce for a delightful finish.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, try seasoning the flour with paprika or onion powder.
  • If you prefer a lighter texture, you can skip the breadcrumbs and use just cornmeal for the coating.
